Building Stronger Communities: The Front Porch Project® and Child Abuse Prevention

Whenever an instance of child abuse and neglect occurs, community members often ask themselves the same things: “How could this happen here?” “Why didn’t anyone notice or do anything?” “How do we stop this from happening again?”
Child abuse prevention is a responsibility that falls on every member of the community, not just professionals. In 2023, there were 4,720 substantiated reports of child abuse in Pennsylvania, according to the Department of Human Services, and 57 fatalities. Preventing these numbers from requires the community be educated on recognizing the signs of abuse and knowing how to respond can be a game-changer in preventing tragic outcomes for children. With the right knowledge and tools, individuals can take proactive steps to intervene before abuse or neglect occurs, ultimately creating safer environments for families and children.
Communities often struggle with “what if” questions after a tragedy. The truth is, proactive education and early intervention can prevent many cases of abuse. As Angela Liddle, president and CEO of Pa Family Support Alliance, once noted, “‘It takes a village’ is an old adage but it’s one that we should all adhere to if we want to stop child abuse and neglect.
And that’s where The Front Porch Project® comes in.
