Preventing Child Abuse & Neglect
Child abuse and neglect are serious problems, affecting one in seven children nationwide. The cases in Pennsylvania have increased in recent years. Many of these children will suffer long-term impacts due to this abuse.
But did you know we can do something about it?!
Child abuse and neglect are preventable
Abuse of children does not have to happen, and everyone benefits when children have safe, stable, and nurturing environments where they can grow and thrive. Child abuse and neglect is a social and health issue that must be addressed in every community.
Child abuse and neglect are complex issues
Child abuse and neglect are complex issues that require strategies which identify and address both the risk factors and protective factors for that individual, community and society.
The CDC outlines the following strategies for addressing child abuse and neglect:
- Strengthen economic supports to families.
- Change social norms to support parents and positive parenting.
- Provide quality care and education early in life.
- Enhance parenting skills to promote healthy child development.
- Intervene to lessen harm and prevent future risk.
